The general idea of metrology is (metrological) traceability, defined as "the property of the result of a measurement or the value of a standard whereby it can be related to stated references, usually national or international standards, through an unbroken chain of comparisons, all having stated uncertainties." The level of traceability establishes the level of comparability of the measurement: whether the result of a measurement can be compared to the previous one.

Metrology Laboratory of IIT Indore is a very important part to the education and research efforts in different areas of engineering with wide variety of high-end measurement instruments. Apart from the academic requirements, the facilities are capable to support necessities of activities related to scientific or fundamental metrology, applied or industrial metrology and legal metrology

The capabilities of this Laboratory include a wide variety of coordinate metrology, surface finish and various traditional dimensional metrology instrumentations.
